Soggy weather might suck for some of us who want to get out and enjoy the final few days of summer but it's great for cottonwoods. If you haven't been to see the Morrissey old-growth cottonwoods you are missing one of Fernie's best natural attractions. The world's oldest cottonwoods are right here in the Elk Valley, protected by the Nature Conservancy. You don't have to be a tree hugger(rednecks have been spotted here) to appreciate the awesome size of these trees. Go west on Hwy 3 from Fernie and take the turnoff at Morrissey. Cross the bridge and park. The new sign shows where the trail begins and it is just a ten minute walk in a natural forest.
